Mini-interview with Josefin

  1. What do you think is needed to achieve a lasting change in the textile industry, with regards to the climate debate?

The daily press and other media constantly bombard us with terrifying facts with regards to this debate. It´s a fact that the textile business is one of the worst when it comes to negative impact on our environment. Tons of these poisonous chemicals are released into our nature, also via the garment, into our bodies. According to the WWF, it takes 10 000 litres of water to produce a pair of jeans. This, in areas where there is often a lack of clean drinking water. So forth, the answer to this question is, what are we, in the western world prepared to pay to make a change? Are we prepared to change our habits? Our lifestyle? Our values? How we consume?

  2. Is it limiting or rewarding to only work with organic/eco-fabrics? What does it require from you as a designer?

Both. It requires higher creativity and ability to think in new ways. One also needs more patience…

  3. What is your dream garment to design?

My dream garment, or rather dream wardrobe is a collection that only constitutes of “the wardrobe favourite”. Durable and lasting (both in quality and design) garments that just work… it’s hard to describe what it is that make them work so well. You know, the garment that you always choose first when the laundry is done. It is seldom the most expensive or the trendiest garment, but the garment that you always feel safe and comfortable in…that one garment that just works until it’s completely worn out!

  4. Why should I wear eco-fashion?

There are two main reasons; firstly, for the sake of your personal health and wellbeing. Consider the fact that in order to produce one kg ordinary cotton, it takes one kg chemicals- poisons that are often left in the finished product and easily absorbed into the skin, creating discomfort and allergies. The second reason is because of our global environment and the great challenges that we are facing with regards to this.
Those reasons should be enough, I think.
